Rubin died Friday at a hospital in Manhattan after “a brief and sudden illness,” according to his nephew, David Rotter. “Steve Rubin was a great publisher,” Grisham said in a statement. “For more than a month, it was humanly impossible to miss ‘Fire and Fury,’" Rubin wrote in his memoir “Words and Music,” published earlier this year. Rubin joined Bantam Books, a venerable paperback publisher, in the mid-1980s, and remained there for six years before leaving for Doubleday. In his memoir, he offered a succinct, if incomplete prediction: “I suppose the headline of my obit will read 'Publisher of ”The Da Vinci Code" dies'.”

Rupert Murdoch is stepping down as chairman of the board of both Fox Corp. and News Corp. , the companies said Thursday. Lachlan Murdoch, one of his sons, will become sole chairman of News Corp. and will continue as Fox Corp.'s executive chair and CEO. At the time, Fox had opposed having the elder Murdoch — as well as other top Fox executives — appearing in person, citing his age. Since July 2022, Murdoch had worked from his home in Montana rather than going into Fox or News Corp. offices, according to a securities filing. News Corp. owns newspapers The Wall Street Journal and New York Post, among other publications, while Fox is the parent company of right-leaning TV networks Fox News and Fox Business.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rupert Murdoch, the 92-year-old Australian media magnate whose creation of Fox News made him a force in American politics, is stepping down as leader of both Fox's parent company and his News Corp. media holdings. Fox said Thursday that Murdoch would become chairman emeritus of both companies, effective at board meetings in November. Stock in Fox Corp., while positive this year, began to decline early in 2022, due in part to lawsuits and investor anxiety over the loss of viewers to smaller media outlets. While Murdoch never ran for political office, politicians in the United States and Britain anxiously sought his approval. Murdoch dismissed them as isolated instances that were “largely political because we're conservative.”Shares of News Corp. and Fox rose Thursday in early trading.

Rupert Murdoch announced he is stepping down as the leader of Fox and News Corp. His elder son, Lachlan, will take over both companies, ending a decades-long family drama. She quit the family business years ago. AdvertisementAdvertisementThat left Lachlan and James, who have passed the title of successor between the two of them over the decades. For much of the 2000s and 2010s, it seemed as if James would eventually take over the family business. A new book claims that Ron DeSantis pushed — and possibly kicked — Tucker Carlson's dog under a table. "DeSantis pushed the dog under the table. The book also claims that Carlson came away from the meeting believing that DeSantis was a "fascist." Asked about the claims, DeSantis campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo also issued a strong denial. "Some will say or write anything to attack Ron DeSantis because they know he presents a threat to their worldview."

Rupert Murdoch has become a "frothing-at-the-mouth" enemy of Donald Trump, according to a new book. The Guardian obtained a copy of Michael Wolff's "The Fall: The End of Fox News and the Murdoch Dynasty"Wolff claims in the book that Murdoch often fantasizes about the former president's death. Author Michael Wolff wrote in "The Fall: The End of Fox News and the Murdoch Dynasty" that Murdoch has in recent times become a "frothing-at-the-mouth" enemy of Trump, per The Guardian's reporting on it. According to Wolff's book, Murdoch's anger has now escalated to the point where he has become fixated on the former president's demise. Wolff claims that Murdoch has made statements like: "'We would all be better off …?'

In the forthcoming book, a copy of which CNN obtained in advance of its release, Wolff makes a number of shocking and explosive claims. Suzanne Scott feared she would lose her job as chief executive of Fox News amid the Dominion lawsuit, he reports. And Fox sources tell me that Wolff made no attempt to fact check his book with either Fox News or its parent company, Fox Corporation. With Fox News, where an author might be basing major claims using less-than-reliable sources, the risks are more pronounced, making such reporting efforts even more paramount. Fox News, for its part, is choosing not to respond to the specific claims Wolff makes in the book.

A story of chaotic corporate stewardship and generational conflict unfolds in the shadow of a looming actuarial certainty. A gritty reboot of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” you might say. In Wolff’s view, playing the saga for laughs is a risky choice: “To treat the Fox phenomenon and the Murdoch family as a cultural confection ripe for comedy,” he writes, “may be dangerously close to liberal sacrilege.”Maybe. You could also argue that laughing at Fox News — and at Donald J. Trump, the subject of Wolff’s recent best-selling trilogy and a major offstage character in “The Fall” — has been a cherished liberal pastime for years. Not that Wolff, who likes to play peekaboo with his own ideological leanings, has anything but contempt for a media mainstream (The Times very much included) that he sees as imprisoned by soggy left-leaning sentiments.

Prosecutors want to know how intoxicated Rudy Giuliani was during and after the 2020 election. They also want to know if Trump knew that Giuliani was drunk when he was advising the former president. An aide testified that Giuliani was "intoxicated" on Election Night 2020 but Giuliani said he was only drinking Diet Coke. Investigators have also asked witnesses if Trump gossiped about Giuliani's drinking, and if the former president ever said Giuliani's drinking habits affected his judgment. One Trump aide, Jason Miller, previously said Giuliani was drunk at the White House's 2020 election night party.

To the Editor:Re “Donald Trump’s Way of Speaking Defies All Logic,” by Michael Wolff (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 6):Mr. Wolff argues persuasively that much of what Donald Trump says can be chalked up to illogical and thus legally inconsequential blather and bluster. Except that is true only when one evaluates the former president’s pronouncements individually. Thus, the route to defeating Mr. Trump’s “my words are meaningless” defense is to assemble them into their coherent and sinisterly subversive whole meaning. To the Editor:Michael Wolff’s depiction of Donald Trump’s language and thinking as disordered rings true after years of hearing and reading the former president’s communications. His speech on the Ellipse on Jan. 6 contains a number of examples of indirect language.

The chaos he creates is his crime; there is, however, no statute against upsetting the dependable order. Many Democrats have come to assume that the dastardly effect of Mr. Trump’s political success must mean that he has an evil purpose. During his trials, prosecutors will try to establish that precise link. He is being pursued under several broad, ill-defined statutes like the Espionage Act, RICO, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. I’d guess that the Trump opposition doesn’t much care which it is — nefarious or spontaneous — but are only grateful that Mr. Trump, in his startling transparence, has foolishly hoisted himself by his own petard.

Meta launched Threads social media platform — its answer to Twitter — on Wednesday. 10 million users signed up for Threads in the first seven hours of its launch, per CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Analysts say it could be tough for Threads to outshine Twitter's existing power user base. And even though Threads launching at an advantageous time, at least four Wall Street analysts say it could be challenging to outshine the incumbent. After all, it could be difficult to get Twitter users to move, Billy Duberstein, a portfolio manager at Stone Oak Capital, wrote on the Motley Fool website on Wednesday.

In the moments after I watched the judge announce the settlement in court, 16 things went through my mind:1. Evidence obtained by Dominion in the lawsuit and filed to court ahead of the settlement appeared to support that theory. There's always the Smartmatic case. In court filings ahead of the settlement, Fox complained about the $1.6 billion price tag Dominion put on the lawsuit. "Would be pretty unreal if you guys like 20x'ed your Dominion investment with these lawsuits," read one text to a Staple Street executive cited in a Fox court filing.

Fox News was heavily criticized by its viewers after it called Arizona for Biden in 2020. After the immediate backlash, Fox News President Jay Wallace was reluctant to call Nevada, per NYT. Nevada's election result would have made Joe Biden's victory all but certain. The network's election team was prepared to call Nevada on November 6, NYT reported, which would have all but cemented Biden's victory. But in a text message reviewed by the Times, Wallace, who has been the network president since 2018, refused to air the result.
Donald Trump Jr. says no one eats more McDonald's "per capita, than Donald Trump." Trump Jr. added that it's "100% accurate" that no one knows the McDonald's menu better than his dad. On an episode of his "Triggered" podcast on Thursday, Trump Jr. talked about his father's trip to East Palestine, Ohio. "No one probably eats more of it, per capita, than Donald Trump," he added. Trump Jr., the former president's oldest son, also said it was nice seeing his father "just sitting there at McDonald's."
Former President Donald Trump visited a McDonald's in East Palestine, Ohio, on Wednesday. Upon ordering, Trump tells a McDonald's worker he knows the menu "better than anyone in here." he tells them, before saying: "So, I know this menu better than you do.
